“He’s Not What You Would Imagine Johnny Depp Would Be Like”: Armie Hammer Debunked a Misconception About Johnny Depp After Their Biggest Flop Together.
The infamous Disney Western helped Armie Hammer to get to know the real Johnny Depp.
In 2013, Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp starred in Disney’s Western epic, “The Lone Ranger.” Depp, fresh off the success of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, was chosen by Disney to lead another major franchise. However, “The Lone Ranger” turned out to be a historic box-office bomb, despite Disney’s high hopes.
The film’s failure didn’t affect the camaraderie between its two leads. Hammer got to know Depp beyond his public persona. Johnny Depp, known for his extravagant lifestyle, was described by Hammer as living “on like an entirely other planet.” Depp’s eccentric roles have led fans to believe he is quirky off-set as well. However, Hammer revealed in an interview that Depp is quite normal in reality.
During the filming of “The Lone Ranger,” Hammer and Depp spent considerable time together in the desert. With little to do, they played guitar, shared stories, and told jokes. Over seven months, Hammer discovered that Depp is approachable and easy to talk to about anything.
Despite the bond formed between the actors, “The Lone Ranger” did not perform well financially. The movie, with a budget of $215 million, grossed only around $260 million, resulting in an estimated loss of $190 million for Disney. The film was widely criticized, especially for Depp’s casting in a Native American role.
However, “The Lone Ranger” found an unexpected supporter in Quentin Tarantino. The “Pulp Fiction” director included the Western in his top films of 2013. Tarantino praised the film, noting that except for a “little soporific” middle section, the rest was incredible. His appreciation highlights the film’s potential, making its box-office failure even more disappointing.
