Though I thoroughly enjoyed The Super Mario Bros. Movie, its depiction of certain characters left me with a major concern about Yoshi in the sequel. Based on the post-credits scene, it’s clear that despite being left out of Mario’s battle against Bowser, Yoshi will be featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. With Yoshi being the film’s biggest tease for the sequel, there’s a strong chance he’ll play a significant role.
As a key character in Mario’s games and the star of his own spinoff series, Yoshi deserves a prominent part in the next movie. I suspect that Yoshi will be hatched from his egg by Mario, leading to a game-accurate team-up where Mario rides the friendly green dinosaur past classic Super Mario monsters and obstacles. Given that Yoshi is one of my favorite Nintendo characters, I’m excited to see what lies ahead for him. However, after watching The Super Mario Bros. Movie, I realize I might not like how Yoshi is portrayed.
Yoshi’s Voice Poses A Huge Challenge for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2
The Super Mario Bros. Movie did a great job of adapting various elements from the games to the big screen, but it took some liberties with character voices. This was expected, as the film is a full-length animated movie featuring video game characters who don’t usually speak. As a result, some characters ended up with personalities that were different from how I imagined them. For example, Donkey Kong came across as pompous, a trait not typically associated with the hero.
I understand that Yoshi could receive a similar treatment for the same reason. In the games, Yoshi is consistently portrayed as a good-natured, friendly dinosaur without any flaws. But if The Super Mario Bros.
Movie 2 decides to make him a significant character, it may choose to develop him further, similar to how it handled Mario, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach, and others. I hope this doesn’t result in Yoshi losing the qualities that make him so lovable.
Yoshi Should Only Say His Name in The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The post-credits scene hinted at the ideal way to portray Yoshi. Just as the egg cracked, he could be heard saying his name. In the games, this is the only word Yoshi speaks. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has shown that a character can convey a wide range of emotions with a single phrase, as seen with Groot’s “I am Groot” line. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 can make Yoshi a standout character without changing his simplicity, unlike how it altered Mario and Donkey Kong in the first movie.
By keeping Yoshi’s dialogue limited to his name, the film can preserve his charm and stay true to the character fans love.
