Emma Roberts recently shared her perspective on growing up amidst her aunt Julia Roberts’ immense global fame, describing it as both fascinating and daunting.
Speaking on the “Table for Two” podcast, Emma, 33, daughter of Eric Roberts and niece to the iconic “Pretty Woman” actress, revealed how closely she witnessed the highs and lows of celebrity life. She acknowledged the allure of fame but emphasized its intimidating aspects, particularly when it overshadows professional achievements.
“I’ve seen firsthand what that looks like with my aunt Julia,” Emma explained. “It’s exhilarating, but also genuinely scary.” Despite her familial ties to Hollywood royalty, Emma expressed a desire to forge her own unique career path rather than simply following in her aunt’s footsteps.
“For me, fame has never been the goal because it can be intimidating,” she added. “I’ve always been determined to ensure my work speaks louder than my public persona. Being excessively famous, where you’re never alone but also struggle to secure meaningful roles, is a daunting prospect.”
Beyond personal experiences, Emma also weighed in on the scrutiny faced by actors with famous relatives, noting a gender disparity in the criticism received. She highlighted the tendency to label actresses like herself as “nepo babies,” contrasting this with the less common scrutiny faced by male counterparts.
“Why is it that young women seem to bear the brunt of this ‘nepo baby’ debate?” she questioned. “I rarely hear the same scrutiny applied to sons of famous actors.”
Emma emphasized that everyone deserves the freedom to pursue their dreams without undue judgment, stressing that success often masks the years of rejection and hard work that precede it.
“People see the victories, the movie posters, but they don’t see the struggles behind them,” she pointed out. “There’s an assumption that success comes easily, especially if you come from a well-known family.”
Emma Roberts’ reflections underscore the complexities of fame and the challenges of carving out one’s identity in the shadow of Hollywood’s bright lights. Her candid insights provide a nuanced glimpse into the realities of navigating the entertainment industry with a famous surname.
