For 106 episodes, viewers experienced the highs and lows of the Pearson family on NBC’s drama series This Is Us. The show, which ran for six seasons, earned 39 Emmy nominations and four wins, capturing the hearts of diverse audiences from its premiere in September 2016 until its finale in May 2022.
Now, fans can continue the conversation with a new rewatch podcast called That Was Us. Hosted by stars Mandy Moore, Chris Sullivan, and Sterling K. Brown, the podcast aims to revisit the show’s layered characters, outstanding performances, and universal themes.
In a recent Zoom interview from their podcast set, the trio discussed how the idea for the rewatch project came about. Sullivan explained, “I have a very good friend named Rob Holysz, who produces podcasts. I texted him one day and said, ‘Should somebody be doing a rewatch podcast of This Is Us?’ He had already spoken with [show creator] Dan Fogelman about it. We talked to Dan, who suggested I speak with Sterling and Mandy. They immediately agreed, and here we are!”
Brown added, “Chris asked me, and I thought, ‘Why haven’t we thought of this before?’”
Moore shared, “We miss each other! We were used to seeing each other regularly for six to seven years. Any excuse to get together and reminisce about that special time is really nice.”
The podcast premiered on May 14 and releases new episodes every Tuesday. Fans can expect discussions about their favorite characters like Rebecca, Toby, and Randall. Sullivan hinted at future live shows and music performances featuring the show’s composers, Sid Khosla and Taylor Goldsmith. “We want to talk to writers, producers, and directors about their experiences on the show,” he said.
Moore mentioned, “We have a few episodes with other cast members planned. Scheduling can be tough because everyone is busy with different projects, but we prefer to have people in the studio if possible.”
Brown emphasized, “Getting cast members in the studio makes the episodes feel more dynamic. We hope to have more frequent appearances from cast members as time goes on.”
Rewatching This Is Us from the beginning has given the hosts a new perspective. Brown reflected on his character, Randall K. Pearson: “Sometimes you make it hard for the rest of us, big guy. There were times I’d be watching basketball, and my wife would say, ‘Think about what Randall would do right now.’ So, I’d pause my game and decorate the Christmas tree.”
Brown continued, “I loved seeing Randall grow into a place of acceptance and feeling ‘enough.’ He started feeling inadequate and always trying to prove himself. I’m happy to see him more at peace with who he is.”
That Was Us is produced by Rabbit Grin Productions and Sara Wehrheim, and hosted by Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, and Chris Sullivan. Fans can tune in for a heartfelt look back at one of television’s most beloved shows.
