Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made a significant adjustment to their son Archie’s birth certificate, removing Meghan’s first names, ‘Rachel Meghan’, and replacing them with ‘Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex’. This move, reported by The Sun, is seen as a departure from the tradition where Kate’s names are listed on the birth certificates of William and Kate’s children.
The change has sparked speculation, with some interpreting it as Prince Harry elevating Meghan to a status equal to his late mother, Princess Diana, who was always referred to as “Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales”. This alteration comes amidst ongoing rumors of tension between Harry, his brother William, and their respective partners.
Following this adjustment, Harry and Meghan also withdrew from the joint charity work they shared with William and Kate, eventually stepping back from their roles within the Royal Family—a move widely dubbed ‘Megxit’. Since then, they have relocated to North America and welcomed their second child, Lilibet.
Lady Colin Campbell, who first noticed the change, remarked, “It is extraordinary and raises all kinds of questions about what the Sussexes were thinking.” Dickie Arbiter, the Queen’s former press secretary, suggested the alterations could be “an early part of their plan.” Royal expert Ingrid Seward added, “For a royal to make changes to a birth certificate is unprecedented, but removing forenames is particularly remarkable. Perhaps this signals their determination to diverge from the Cambridges.”
Despite the publication of Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” last year—a book detailing his relationship with senior members of the Firm, including his father King Charles and brother Prince William—relations between the Sussexes and the royal family do not appear to be improving.
Harry and Meghan’s children, Archie and Lilibet, are now recognized as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet following the passing of the Queen.
