Nickelodeon has announced the renewal of its hip-hop-centric sitcom, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, for a fifth season. The upcoming season, consisting of 13 episodes, is scheduled to begin production on July 8 at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, with a premiere set for late 2024. The season will start with a holiday-themed episode.
The series, which debuted in 2020 during a surge in kids’ rap content, follows the story of an aspiring young hip-hop artist who moves in with his cousins and extended family. The show’s humor stems from the personality clashes between the ambitious rapper and his more conventional relatives.
Tyler Perry, the creator and executive producer of the show, is widely recognized for his role as Madea in 13 comedy films, including the 2015 family animated film Madea’s Tough Love.
Upon its launch, Young Dylan achieved significant success, garnering the highest ratings for a Nickelodeon series premiere since 2017, with over 1.3 million viewers tuning in across two time slots. This strong start positioned the show well amid a broader trend of kid-focused rap content.
Nickelodeon has leveraged the popularity of the show by featuring the 15-year-old character Young Dylan, played by 15-year-old actor and rapper Dylan Gilmer, in guest appearances on other Nickelodeon series. This includes a role in the hip-hop-focused show That Girl Lay Lay and a 2022 crossover episode of Side Hustle titled “Worlds Collide,” which brought together characters from Young Dylan and four other Nickelodeon shows.
