In Season 17 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, streaming on Paramount+, the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) faces a unique challenge. They must collaborate with captured serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) to track down the dangerous Gold Star killers. This pursuit involves Emily Prentiss becoming a prime target, David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) conversing with an imaginary Voit, and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) working with Tyler Green (Ryan-James Hatanaka). The entire team is under intense stress and pressure.
The plot thickens with the arrival of Dr. Jill Gideon (Felicity Huffman). Previously married to Jason Gideon and deeply connected to Rossi, Jill’s entry into the BAU promises significant changes. She might also hold the key to understanding the Gold Star program fully.
In an interview with Collider, co-stars Mantegna and Huffman discussed introducing a character with a rich history into the show, the complex storytelling, Dr. Gideon’s link to Gold Star, and the dynamic between Rossi and Jill. They also shared insights into their mutual respect and speculated on the potential return of former cast members.
Collider: Joe, Rossi has been through a lot this season. He keeps seeing Voit and realizes he needs to address this issue. What was it like filming the scene where Rossi dreams that Voit shoots Emily Prentiss in the head?
Joe Mantegna: Having been on the show for 15 years, I’ve experienced many real emotions. When we shot that scene, especially the part with Paget [Brewster] in a dangerous situation, it felt incredibly real. Our relationships on the show are very strong, which made it easy to tap into genuine feelings. It wasn’t hard to let the scenario guide my performance.
