James Cameron’s sci-fi sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, has now become the fourth highest-grossing film worldwide, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens in total box office earnings. As of now, the film has grossed $2.117 billion globally, adding to Cameron’s impressive record with three of the top four highest-grossing movies of all time.
Avatar: The Way of Water currently ranks just behind Cameron’s Titanic, the original Avatar, and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame in all-time box office earnings. Avatar still holds the top position, having earned $2.92 billion, while Titanic is set for a 3D re-release next month around Valentine’s Day to further bolster its total of $2.194 billion.
Since its release on December 16, Avatar 2 has maintained its position as the top film at the box office, despite competition from recent releases like A Man Called Otto, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and the horror hit M3gan.
The Way of Water has also garnered four Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Picture, ensuring its continued run in cinemas through March.
In a rare occurrence, another billion-dollar grossing film, Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise, is also nominated for Best Picture alongside The Way of Water. Top Gun: Maverick dominated the global box office for much of 2022 until the late-year release of Avatar 2.
Despite challenges in cinema attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing popularity of streaming services, films like Elvis, which earned nearly $300 million worldwide, and the indie success Everything Everywhere All At Once, also proved to be financial successes in 2022.
Additionally, Women Talking, which initially struggled at the box office in 2022, has seen an increase in ticket sales following its recent Best Picture nomination.
