Jamie Lee Curtis has won her first Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in FX’s “The Bear.” The actress received the award during the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, adding another accolade to her impressive career.
Curtis, who has been acting since the age of 19, expressed her gratitude after the win. “I’m 65. For seven years, I marketed yogurt that makes you sh*t,” she told Deadline. “I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to work on projects with this much nuance and complexity. It’s just been the thrill of my creative life these last couple of years. I’m humble and incredibly grateful.”
In her role as Donna, the mother of Mikey Berzatto (Jon Bernthal), Carmen (Jeremy Allen White), and Sugar (Abby Elliot), Curtis portrayed a character struggling with alcoholism and what appears to be Borderline Personality Disorder. Her standout performance in Season 2, particularly during a chaotic Christmas Eve dinner scene in episode 6, left a lasting impression on both critics and viewers. Curtis’s co-star Bernthal also won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor for his role in the same series.
The episode, which runs for 66 minutes, showcases Curtis’s ability to convey a range of emotions, from tears to anger, depicting a complex family dynamic.
Curtis’s Emmy win follows her recent Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” This marks her first Emmy win, though she was previously nominated in 1998 for her performance in “Nicholas’ Gift.”
When asked about her future ambitions, Curtis, who referred to herself as the “luckiest girl in the world,” expressed uncertainty about pursuing a Grammy or Tony Award to achieve EGOT status. “I can’t sing at all, and I’ve never been on stage. I’ve never done a play,” she explained.
“But I never thought any of this was going to be possible in my life at all.”
Curtis acknowledged the challenges actors face, stating, “This is an industry full of rejection. You are rejected every day when you’re an actor.” Despite that, she remains passionate about her craft and the opportunities it brings.
In addition to Curtis, “The Bear” featured other notable guest stars in its second season, including Jon Bernthal, John Mulaney, Bob Odenkirk, and Sarah Paulson. The show also received accolades for Picture Editing and Casting for a Comedy Series at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
