Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for the comedy series Phony, created by Nick Paley. Connie Britton is set to take on a leading role in the project, according to Variety.
Phony is described as a coming-of-age mystery. The plot follows a teenager who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident. He discovers that his mother, played by Britton, has seemingly been replaced by an impostor. Britton’s character, Ellen, is a single mother and the principal of her son’s high school.
Originally developed at Hulu in 2022, Paley will serve as the writer, executive producer, and director for the pilot. He recently co-wrote the indie hit Marcel the Shell With Shoes On and directed episodes of Broad City on Comedy Central.
In addition to her acting role, Britton will also executive produce the series. Charlie Alderman from Charlie’s Production Company will join her as an executive producer, along with Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles. Andrea Massaro from Goddard Textiles will produce the pilot. The studio behind the project is 20th Television, which absorbed ABC Signature after its recent closure.
This announcement comes as Hulu continues to expand its comedy offerings. The streaming service is also preparing another pilot titled Downforce, featuring Murray Bartlett and Eve Hewson, set in the world of professional auto racing.
Connie Britton is a five-time Emmy Award nominee. She received nominations for her performances in Friday Night Lights, American Horror Story, Nashville, and The White Lotus.
