Netflix’s latest release, Time Cut, has rocketed to the top of the streamer’s charts, amassing over 22 million views in its first week since debuting on October 30. Despite its popularity, the sci-fi horror movie has sparked divided opinions from critics and audiences alike.
The film centers around Lucy (Madison Bailey from Outer Banks), a high school student and aspiring inventor who accidentally time-travels back to 2003. She embarks on a mission to save her older sister, Summer (Antonia Gentry of Ginny & Georgia), from being murdered by a masked serial killer.
In terms of viewership, Time Cut has outperformed other recent releases, including Sam Raimi’s horror film Don’t Move and the Marvel sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, within Netflix’s top 10 rankings. However, its reception on Rotten Tomatoes has been less favorable. The movie currently holds a critic score of just 26%, with many reviewers pointing out flaws in its execution.
Decider describes the film as “piles of period-specific references sans humor, heavy drama without depth, and characters without much going on in their interior lives.” Bloody Disgusting adds that Time Cut “may be proof that it’s time to move on from time travel-themed slashers.” Paste Magazine similarly criticizes the film as a “warmed-over piece of time travel nostalgia bait,” noting that it seems to prioritize music choices over plot development.
Audience reactions are also lukewarm, with the film earning a 33% score from viewers. One reviewer writes, “It is a pity that the execution of this movie is extremely sloppy because the cast is great and the ideas are not bad. But in the end, the movie is over before you even begin to identify with the characters.”
Despite the mixed reviews, Time Cut continues to hold strong at the number one spot on Netflix. It is currently available for streaming.
