Mattel is facing backlash after a significant error on the packaging of its new “Wicked” movie dolls. Instead of directing customers to the official film website, the packaging mistakenly lists a URL that leads to a pornographic site.
The dolls, based on characters from the upcoming film adaptation of the acclaimed musical starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, were intended to feature the link to WickedMovie.com. However, the printed address was simply Wicked.com, which redirects users to an adult content site that requires visitors to be at least 18 years old to enter.
The site, Wicked Pictures, is known for producing adult films and includes explicit content.
In response to the mistake, Mattel issued a statement expressing regret for the oversight. The company noted that it was made aware of the misprint and emphasized that the incorrect website is not suitable for children. Mattel advised parents to either discard the packaging or cover up the erroneous link. They also encouraged consumers who have purchased the dolls to contact customer service for further assistance.
Images of the dolls’ packaging began circulating online shortly after the film’s premiere in Los Angeles, prompting criticism from fans.
Many took to social media to voice their concerns about the inappropriate link on products aimed primarily at children. One user remarked on X, “Whoever is responsible for your marketing/packaging for the new official Wicked dolls have made a HUGE mistake.”
The “Wicked” dolls are available at major retailers including Target, Amazon, and Kohl’s. Following this incident, Mattel has begun removing the affected products from store shelves.
The film is set to be released in theaters on November 22, with a second part planned for next year. Prior to this controversy, Erivo and Grande had expressed their excitement about seeing their characters transformed into dolls in a video shared on Instagram.
