Russell Crowe’s role in Gladiator marked a significant turning point in his career. As director Ridley Scott prepares to release a sequel 25 years after filming iconic battle scenes in Farnham, Surrey, two extras from the original movie have shared their memories of the experience.
Scot Newing recalled a moment when he shared a scene with Crowe and even suggested a local pub to co-star Richard Harris for a drink after filming. Andy Bowden reminisced about the dramatic explosions during filming and how a moment of curiosity led him and a friend to unexpectedly meet Crowe and Scott.
The filming took place over 10 days in February 1999, during which the beautiful Bourne Woods appeared to be engulfed in flames. Bowden explained the special effects used, stating, “They buried gas canisters underground, which operated like a gas barbecue, allowing control over the flames.”
While waiting between takes, Bowden described the surreal atmosphere on set. He often found himself chatting about football with fellow extras dressed as centurions and barbarians. Newing noted that the cast was friendly and approachable, mentioning that Crowe was “a pleasure to work with.” He also shared that Harris was eager to know where he could grab a drink after filming.
Bowden’s curiosity led him and another extra to peek inside a tent where they encountered Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. “They were delighted to see us and invited us in,” he said.
Both Bowden and Newing cherish their memories from the shoot.
Bowden fondly described it as “a week of fighting and playacting in the woods with your mates.” For Newing, one of his best memories was sharing screen time with Crowe, even if it was just walking in the background. “That was my moment of glory,” he added.
The film Gladiator not only launched Crowe’s career but also transformed Bourne Woods into a notable filming location. Since then, it has been featured in numerous productions, including Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and other major films like Harry Potter, Thor, and Wonder Woman.
