Josh O’Connor, known for his role in Challengers, has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg’s latest film project. The film is backed by Universal Pictures and will also feature Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson.
Details about the untitled film remain limited. However, sources indicate it will include sci-fi elements and is Spielberg’s first major production since 2018’s Ready Player One. The story is based on an idea from Spielberg himself, with the screenplay written by David Koepp. Koepp has previously collaborated with Spielberg on several successful films, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Kristie Macosko Krieger, a long-time associate of Spielberg, is producing the film.
Universal Pictures has scheduled the release date for May 15, 2026.
O’Connor is currently gaining attention during awards season for his performance in Challengers, a tennis drama directed by Luca Guadagnino. The film has earned nearly $100 million worldwide following its theatrical release by MGM.
In addition to this project, O’Connor is filming The Mastermind, an art heist drama directed by Kelly Reichardt, alongside Alana Haim. He will also appear in Rian Johnson’s latest murder mystery titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which Netflix plans to release next year.
O’Connor is represented by CAA, Independent Talent Group, and Johnson Shapiro.
