Before his passing in May, songwriter Richard M. Sherman wrote a new verse for the classic song “It’s a Small World.” This verse will be revealed for the first time in an upcoming ABC special titled “The Last Verse.”
The three-and-a-half-minute short film will air on Wednesday, November 27, during “The Untold Story of Mary Poppins: A Special Edition of 20/20,” which starts at 9 p.m. ET. According to ABC News, the special will take viewers on a global journey, showcasing how the song has been passed down through generations, culminating in the unveiling of Sherman’s heartfelt new verse.
Richard Sherman, who co-wrote the songs for Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and “It’s a Small World” with his brother Robert, passed away at the age of 95. He completed the new verse before his death.
“The Untold Story of Mary Poppins” is part of a two-night event celebrating the 60th anniversary of Mary Poppins. The special will feature rare photos, footage, and interviews with notable figures such as Dick Van Dyke, Josh Gad, John Stamos, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Julie Andrews.
The following night, Thanksgiving (November 28), ABC will air a presentation of the original Mary Poppins film starring Andrews and Van Dyke.
Produced by ABC News Studios and 20/20, the special is led by executive producers Matt Lombardi, David Sloan, and Janice Johnston.
