Ryan Gosling, star of Barbie and La La Land, is in negotiations to headline an untitled Star Wars film, directed by Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool and Wolverine. The screenplay for the project is being crafted by Jonathan Tropper, whose credits include This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project. Levy has been developing the film since late 2022 and will also produce the movie through his 21 Laps banner, in partnership with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The upcoming Star Wars film is expected to be a standalone story, separate from the Skywalker Saga that concluded with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. While plot details remain under wraps, Gosling’s potential involvement could elevate the project to the forefront of Lucasfilm’s film development slate, placing it ahead of several other Star Wars projects announced at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, including those from directors James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Dave Filoni. This film would follow the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars movie in over five years, which is set to debut on May 22, 2026.
For Gosling, this marks a pivotal moment in his career, as he has yet to join a major franchise like many of his contemporaries. His next project will be the sci-fi thriller Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel.
