Sycamore Studios has secured the film rights to the popular graphic novel series “Zita the Spacegirl,” expanding its portfolio as a newly established animation company. Founded in August by Christian McGuigan and Timothy Reckart, Sycamore aims to create family-friendly animated content.
The acquisition of “Zita the Spacegirl” follows a successful Series A funding round, which reportedly raised mid-seven-figure sums. The graphic novel, written by Ben Hatke, tells the story of a courageous girl who embarks on a cosmic adventure to rescue her best friend from aliens. Zita’s journey transforms her into an intergalactic hero, showcasing themes of bravery and sacrifice. Previously, the project was in development at Fox Animation and has received several accolades, including recognition from the American Library Association.
McGuigan, the CEO of Sycamore Studios, expressed excitement about adapting “Zita,” stating, “Ben Hatke has created a world full of imagination, heart, and heroism.” He emphasized the studio’s commitment to producing visually stunning and emotionally impactful films that resonate with children and families.
In addition to “Zita,” Sycamore Studios is also developing an animated adaptation of “Doctor Dolittle,” with screenwriters Cal Brunker and Bob Barlen attached to the project. The studio is currently expanding its team, having recently hired Cooper Waterman, a veteran animation executive known for his work on franchises like “Casper” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
With a focus on creating high-quality animated films that families can trust, Sycamore Studios is poised to make a significant impact in the animation industry.
