Filming for the highly anticipated “Peaky Blinders” movie has commenced in North Wales, with Hollywood actor Cillian Murphy spotted on set. Murphy reprises his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in this continuation of the acclaimed crime drama series.
The “Peaky Blinders” television show ran for six seasons on BBC, following the rise of the Shelby crime family in Birmingham after World War I. The upcoming film will explore the story further, set during World War II. Filming began at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Wrexham on Sunday.
Local business owner Chris Allen noted that while residents were aware of filming in the area, details about the project were kept secret.
Murphy was seen aboard a narrowboat, dressed in his signature Tommy Shelby attire, including his recognizable cap. The crew filmed scenes along the aqueduct and nearby waterways, temporarily closing the visitor center and towpath to the public.
A helicopter was also spotted overhead, likely capturing aerial footage of the production. Allen remarked that locals quickly recognized the filming as “Peaky Blinders,” thanks to the steam-powered narrowboat and Murphy’s distinctive clothing. He added, “Cillian Murphy certainly stands out! It was an exciting day.”
Murphy’s narrowboat featured vintage signage for “W.G.E. Wyrley & Essington,” while another boat displayed “Thomas Coathupe & Sons Ltd – 1893.” The film, also known as “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man,” will feature Murphy alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Stephen Graham, and Tim Roth. Irish actor Barry Keoghan has also joined the cast but has not yet been seen on set.
Filming locations have included various sites across the UK, such as Birmingham and Dudley. However, no release date for the movie has been announced.
“Peaky Blinders” chronicles the rise of the fictional gang in Birmingham and their conflicts with law enforcement and rival gangs, including the Irish Mob and New York Mafia. The series debuted in 2013 and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Regarding future seasons, it has been confirmed that there will not be a seventh season. The series concluded with its sixth season in 2022, but creator Steven Knight has assured fans that Tommy Shelby’s story will continue through this feature-length film. Tom Harper directs the movie based on a script by Knight, who is also producing alongside Patrick Holland, Cillian Murphy, and Guy Heeley.
