The highly anticipated sequel Pushpa 2: The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, has made an impressive debut at the global box office, earning $92.5 million over its four-day weekend, according to data from Comscore. This makes it the third-highest grossing film worldwide, following Disney’s Moana 2 and Universal’s Wicked.
Directed by Sukumar, Pushpa 2: The Rule continues the story of Pushpa: The Rise (2021), which grossed around $46 million. In the sequel, Allu Arjun reprises his role as Pushpa Raj, the daring red sandalwood smuggler. The plot follows Pushpa’s rise in the criminal underworld after humiliating Superintendent of Police Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, who becomes his fierce adversary. Alongside Shekhawat, Pushpa faces threats from rival smuggler Mangalam Srinu, as his power grows.
The film launched on Thursday, December 5, with a worldwide opening day gross of $34.6 million, breaking the Indian record set by RRR in 2022 ($26 million). Pushpa 2 opened in 38 global markets, including North America, where it grossed $9.3 million, including $4.8 million over the three-day weekend. It currently holds the fourth spot on the North American box office chart, surpassing the previous 2024 record holder, Kalki 2898 AD, which earned $21 million on its opening day.
Pushpa 2 has quickly risen to become the third-highest grossing Indian film of 2024, following Kalki 2898 AD ($141 million) and Stree 2 ($103 million). With its current momentum, the film is on track to become the highest-grossing Indian film of the year within days. Additionally, the film earned $1.4 million from 16 global Imax markets, including $650,000 from 31 Imax screens in India, marking the largest local language Imax opening of 2024 and the fourth-highest Imax opening ever in the country.
In the global box office rankings, Disney’s Moana 2 led the weekend with $155.7 million, including $52 million from North America, bringing its total to $600 million worldwide. Wicked followed in second place with $61.7 million, including $34.8 million in North America, for a total of $455.5 million.
In fourth place was Gladiator II, which earned $29.4 million, pushing its cumulative total to $368.4 million. Rounding out the top five was the Chinese film Her Story, with $12.2 million.
Pushpa 2’s remarkable opening marks a major milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage, cementing Allu Arjun’s status as one of the industry’s top stars.
