Chris Evans is reportedly making a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in 2026.
Best known for his portrayal of Captain America/Steve Rogers in the MCU, Evans’ role in the new film remains a mystery. This is especially intriguing given that his character’s arc in Avengers: Endgame saw Captain America age into an elderly man before passing the shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). However, Evans made a brief appearance earlier this year in Deadpool & Wolverine, where he reprised his role as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, from the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films.
While plot details for Doomsday are still under wraps, it has been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will also return to the MCU—not as Iron Man, but in the role of Doctor Victor von Doom, the iconic villain from the Fantastic Four franchise.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Doomsday will kick off a two-part Avengers storyline that will conclude the Multiverse Saga. The Russo brothers, who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, have hinted that the two films will be connected in a similar fashion to the previous Avengers blockbusters, which featured a wide array of Marvel heroes. Expect a star-studded ensemble, with Evans, Downey, and many other top-tier superheroes likely making appearances—potentially in multiple forms, given the multiverse-driven plot.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to premiere on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on May 7, 2027.
