Jeremy Allen White has been cast as the voice of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son, in the upcoming Star Wars film The Mandalorian & Grogu, Variety has confirmed. This role marks White’s first major franchise appearance following his breakout performance as the Emmy-winning chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in the hit FX series The Bear.
Details about the plot of The Mandalorian & Grogu have been scarce, but White’s casting provides a significant clue about the story. His character, Rotta the Hutt, is set to make an impact in the world of the titular bounty hunter, Mando, and his young companion, Grogu, often referred to as Baby Yoda. The Star Wars series The Mandalorian, available on Disney+, is set after the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi, in which Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) defeats Jabba the Hutt.
The absence of Jabba created a power vacuum on Tatooine, explored in the spin-off The Book of Boba Fett, which saw Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) seize control of Jabba’s criminal empire. It seems likely that Boba Fett and his ally Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) could return in this new film, especially with Jabba’s son playing a pivotal role.
White, who is currently filming the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere, first gained recognition for his portrayal of Philip “Lip” Gallagher on Showtime’s Shameless. His role in The Bear, where he stars as a talented chef taking over his family’s restaurant in Chicago, catapulted him into stardom. White’s performance earned him back-to-back Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards.
The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau, will star Pedro Pascal as Mando, also known as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver in an undisclosed role. Written by Favreau and Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, the film is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. It will be the first Star Wars feature film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
