Disney+ has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights for the 97th Academy Awards in France. The streaming service will offer French subscribers live access to both the red carpet and the ceremony on March 2, 2025, from the Dolby Theater.
Previously, French pay-TV network Canal+ held the exclusive rights to the Oscars. Canal+ often aired marathon broadcasts late into the night, focusing on French talent and showcasing the event in the early morning hours. In recent years, interest in the Oscars has grown in France, particularly with the success of French filmmakers like Florian Zeller, whose film The Father earned widespread attention. Zeller, along with French-language remakes like CODA, which won Best Picture, helped increase local excitement. Zeller even accepted his Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay from Canal+’s Paris studio.
Public interest in the Oscars reached new heights in 2024, especially after Anatomy of a Fall by French director Justine Triet received multiple nominations and won Best Original Screenplay. This momentum is expected to continue, with hopes that Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez will make a strong showing in 2025.
Disney has not yet revealed any further broadcast plans for the 2025 Oscars ceremony, which will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.
The announcement was made by Disney executives during a preview event in Paris on Tuesday. At the same event, Disney executives also highlighted upcoming projects, including Paradise, a new series starring Sterling K. Brown and created by This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman; Dying for Sex, a drama featuring Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Sissy Spacek; and The Lost Station Girls, a true-crime thriller about the two-decade investigation into the murders of four young women, starring Camille Razat of Emily in Paris.
Additionally, Disney revealed a new French original series, Surveiller et Punir, a workplace comedy about two prison guards. The series is created by Simply Black filmmakers John Wax and Jean-Pascal Zadi, and its title is a nod to Michel Foucault’s book Discipline and Punish.
