Universal Pictures has officially changed the title of the highly anticipated sequel to Wicked, now calling it Wicked: For Good. The new name reflects a deeper emotional connection to the story, drawing inspiration from the iconic second-act song about the transformation of its central characters, Glinda and Elphaba.
Scheduled for release on November 21, 2025, Wicked: For Good will continue the story of the beloved Broadway musical, picking up where the first film left off. The first part of the two-film adaptation, Wicked: Part One, premiered in theaters on November 22, 2024. It has already proven a massive success, grossing $359 million in the U.S. and more than $524 million globally. The film has become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in domestic box office history, surpassing 1978’s Grease, and is now the second-largest worldwide stage-to-screen conversion after Mamma Mia! (2008), which earned $611 million.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the Wicked franchise stars Ariana Grande as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jonathan Bailey. The films serve as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, exploring the origins of Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West, set in the magical world of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival.
In Wicked: Part One, the story follows Glinda and Elphaba’s early years at Shiz University, where the two are initially forced into a reluctant roommate arrangement but eventually become close friends. The sequel will delve into Elphaba’s rise to power, as she embraces her magical abilities and faces being branded an enemy of the state by the Wizard and Madame Morrible.
The title Wicked: For Good captures the emotional transformation of both characters as they navigate their evolving friendship and its consequences. Director Jon M. Chu hinted at the intense emotional stakes of the upcoming film, stating that the story has become “eight times more relevant” in the current social climate. He emphasized the film’s exploration of truth, choices, and their long-lasting consequences, suggesting that the second part of the Wicked saga will offer an even more powerful experience for audiences.
