Apple TV+ has officially renewed Bad Monkey for a second season, Variety has confirmed. The series, which premiered on the streaming platform in August and concluded its first season in October, was based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name.
Despite the release of a sequel novel, Razor Girl, Bad Monkey’s second season will not adapt the book, according to sources familiar with the show’s production. Bill Lawrence, who developed the series for television, continues to lead the project, with Vince Vaughn starring in the lead role of Andrew Yancy.
“I’ve always admired Carl Hiaasen as a writer, and it’s an honor to continue telling his story with Vince Vaughn and our fantastic cast,” Lawrence said. “I’m deeply grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ and Warner Bros., as well as the entire team that helps bring this show to life.”
Bad Monkey follows the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), a disgraced former Miami police officer turned health inspector in the Florida Keys. When he uncovers a case involving a severed human arm, Yancy sees an opportunity to get reinstated with the police—if he can solve the murder, navigating through a cast of eccentric Floridian characters and a troublemaking monkey.
“Since its debut, Bad Monkey has quickly become a fan favorite,” said Matt Cherniss, Apple TV+’s head of programming. “With Vince Vaughn leading the way, alongside a brilliant cast, we’re excited for viewers to dive deeper into the sun-soaked, humorous world Bill Lawrence has created in the next season.”
The first season featured a star-studded ensemble, including L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Special guest stars included John Ortiz, Zach Braff, Ashley Nicole Black, Scott Glenn, and Charlotte Lawrence, who made her television debut.
Bill Lawrence serves as the showrunner and executive producer, alongside Vince Vaughn, who also executive produces. Jeff Ingold and Lisa Katzer of Doozer Productions also serve as executive producers, with Matt Tarses and Marcos Siega rounding out the producing team. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence is under an overall deal.
Bad Monkey marks Lawrence’s third collaboration with Apple TV+. He co-created the hit comedy Ted Lasso and is currently working on Shrinking, which recently concluded its second season and has already been renewed for a third.
