Ben Affleck will star in and direct the upcoming Netflix thriller Animals. Affleck is replacing Matt Damon, who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Gillian Anderson has also joined the cast.
The film is slated to begin production in Los Angeles in April. Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Captain Phillips and The Hunger Games, wrote the screenplay.
Animals follows a mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped13. They must navigate a dangerous situation to save him.
Damon will remain on the project as a producer through Artists Equity, his company with Affleck, along with Dani Bernfeld. Brad Weston and Collin Creighton of MakeReady, and Fifth Season will also produce134. Michael Joe, Kevin Halloran, and Lucy Damon from Artists Equity will be executive producers.
Affleck has previously directed and starred in films such as Argo, The Town, and Air4. Anderson is known for her roles in The X-Files, The Crown, and Sex Education. Additional casting announcements for Animals are expected soon.
