After eight years without a new LP, Wu-Tang Clan is releasing a new album. The group has been busy with a TV series, a documentary, tours, and a Las Vegas residency. However, they have teamed up with Mathematics, a longtime friend and DJ, for this project. Mathematics also produced their 2017 album, “The Saga Continues”.
The new album is titled “Black Samson, The Bastard Swordsman: From The Wu-Tang, the Saga Continues Collection”. It will be available exclusively on Record Store Day, April 12. The album is a joint effort between Wu-Tang Clan and Mathematics, who produced the entire project.
Raekwon said the album is a “great body work”. He added that Mathematics is a “top tier producer” who puts his soul into his music.
Mathematics, who also designed the Wu-Tang Clan logo, explained the title. He said it pays homage to Blaxploitation movies like “Black Samson,” “Black Caesar,” and “Super Fly”. He grew up watching these films in the 1970s. The “Bastard Swordsman” part of the title is an ode to old karate movies, which he and the Wu-Tang Clan members loved.
Mathematics started his career as a DJ for GZA in 19902. At that time, GZA was known as “the Genius”. By 1993, Mathematics became the official DJ for the entire Wu-Tang Clan. In the mid-1990s, he began producing tracks for Wu-Tang group and solo albums. Since 2003, he has released his own projects.
While RZA, the group’s founder, has focused on films and solo projects, Mathematics brought the Clan together for “Black Samson”. The album features verses from Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Cappadonna, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, GZA, and RZA.
