Live Nation Productions is currently working on a comedy film inspired by the iconic band Green Day. The movie, titled New Years Rev, tells the story of three friends who embark on a cross-country road trip to Los Angeles, under the mistaken belief that their band is scheduled to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.
The film follows these friends — portrayed by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust — on their chaotic journey filled with misadventures. The story is inspired by the early touring experiences of Green Day, with the band’s time spent in a tour van serving as a key reference point.
Written and directed by Lee Kirk, the film also features a star-studded cast, including The Office’s Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, along with Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo. Filming is currently underway in Oklahoma.
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong spoke about the essence of touring in the early days, stating, “Van days rule. You’ll drive all night on no sleep and then play a show for a handful of people. But you’ll do it again the next day. You’re doing it with your bandmates, who become your family, and it’s unlike anything else. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief begin.”
New Years Rev is produced by Tim Perell for Process, along with Green Day’s Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool, and Stella Bulochnikov for Pat Solitano Productions. Executive producers include Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino for Live Nation Productions and Jonathan Daniel.
Green Day, known for hits like Basket Case and American Idiot, released their latest album Saviors in 2024. The band is also set to headline Coachella in April.
Live Nation Productions, the film and TV division of Live Nation Entertainment, has produced several music-driven projects, including the Oscar-winning A Star Is Born, Moonage Daydream, Love, Lizzo, and Anderson .Paak’s upcoming K-Pops.
The lead actors, Thames, Coffman, and Foust, are represented by WME, MAG Talent Agency, and Paradigm, respectively.
Ryan Kroft, head of film and TV at Live Nation Productions, explained the film’s message, saying, “With Green Day’s guidance, New Years Rev tells the story of young artists chasing their dreams — long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage. It’s a celebration of live music.”
