A live-action “Dungeons & Dragons” (D&D) TV series is being resurrected at Netflix. Variety confirmed that a new version of the project is in development.
The series, titled “The Forgotten Realms,” is named after the famous D&D campaign setting. It was previously planned for Paramount+, but it didn’t proceed due to Paramount’s strategic changes and Hasbro’s sale of eOne. Hasbro Entertainment is producing the new project.
Drew Crevello, previously the showrunner for the Paramount+ series, will be the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the Netflix version. Shawn Levy will also be an executive producer.
Crevello co-created and co-showran the Apple limited series “WeCrashed”. He also helped develop films like “X-Men: First Class” and “Deadpool”.
“Dungeons & Dragons” was created in 1974 by E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. It is a highly influential game where players create characters from fantasy races like elves, orcs, and dwarves. They participate in role-playing across various settings and stories.
Previous D&D onscreen projects include an animated TV series in the 1980s and live-action movies starting in 2000. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” a well-received action-comedy, earned over $205 million worldwide in 2023.
