Danielle Deadwyler has joined the cast of an upcoming college comedy series at HBO, starring Steve Carell, Variety has confirmed.
The show, which was picked up by the network in May 2024, features Carell alongside “Ted Lasso” star Phil Dunster and Charly Clive. HBO has ordered 10 half-hour episodes. The series is described as a single-camera comedy set on a college campus, focusing on the complex relationship between an author, played by Carell, and his daughter, portrayed by Clive.
While details about Deadwyler’s character are being kept confidential, her recent TV credits include roles in “Watchmen,” “Station Eleven,” and “P-Valley.” She has also appeared in Netflix’s “From Scratch.”
Known primarily for her film performances, Deadwyler gained widespread recognition for her roles in “Till,” “The Harder They Fall,” and “The Piano Lesson.”
Deadwyler is represented by Paradigm, Play Management, and Ziffren Brittenham.
The first episode of the series was written by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, who will also serve as executive producers. Carell will executive produce as well, alongside Lawrence, who is producing through Doozer Productions, with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence and Tarses are under overall deals, is the studio behind the project.
This marks the second collaboration between Lawrence and a “Ted Lasso” star since the series ended. Lawrence also works with Brett Goldstein, known for playing Roy Kent, on the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” which they co-created with Jason Segel, who also stars in the show.
