Canadian pop sensation Tate McRae has made history by landing her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with her latest release, ‘So Close to What’. This achievement marks not only her first chart-topping album but also her third full-length studio album overall. McRae’s success is further highlighted as she secures the biggest opening numbers for a female artist this year.
‘So Close to What’ debuted with an impressive 177,000 equivalent album units, according to Luminate. The album was preceded by three singles: ‘2 Hands’, ‘Sports Car’, and ‘It’s OK I’m OK’, with the latter reaching No. 20 on the Hot 100 chart. McRae experienced her largest streaming week ever with 137 streams and sold 71,000 copies, both career highs.
This debut is the largest for a female artist since Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Short n’ Sweet’ entered with 362,000 units in September. Currently, ‘Short n’ Sweet’ holds the No. 5 spot on the chart.
Tate McRae recently performed on ‘Saturday Night Live’ on March 1, singing ‘Dear God’ and her popular hit ‘Sports Car’. Her performance was introduced by host Shane Gillis.
‘So Close to What’ is the only new entry on the albums chart this week. Other notable positions include Drake and PartyNextDoor’s ‘$ome $exy $ongs’ at No. 2, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘GNX’ at No. 3, and SZA’s ‘SOS’ at No. 4. Bad Bunny’s ‘Debí Tirar Más Fotos’ is at No. 6, and The Weeknd’s ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ is at No. 7. Rounding out the top 10 are Chappell Roan’s ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ at No. 8, Morgan Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ at No. 9, and Billie Eilish’s ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ at No. 10.
