Tate McRae has achieved her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with her latest release, So Close to What. The album marks McRae’s third full-length project and makes a significant impact by becoming the highest debut for a female artist this year.
The 15-track album debuted at the top spot with 177,000 equivalent album units, according to Luminate. McRae’s latest project was launched with three singles: “2 Hands,” “Sports Car,” and “It’s OK I’m OK,” with the latter making the highest mark on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 20.
The album had a record-breaking week, with McRae earning 137 million streams and 71,000 sales. This marks her biggest streaming week and highest sales week to date. With a total of 177,000 equivalent album units, So Close to What is the biggest debut by a woman this year, surpassing Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, which debuted with 362,000 units in September. On this week’s chart, Short n’ Sweet sits at No. 5.
McRae made a notable TV appearance on Saturday Night Live on March 1, where she performed “Dear God” and the viral hit “Sports Car” with a team of male dancers. She was introduced by comedian and host Shane Gillis.
So Close to What is the only new album on this week’s chart. Drake and PartyNextDoor’s album $ome $exy $ongs, which includes a reference to McRae in the song “Small Town Fame,” drops to No. 2 after debuting at No. 1 last week. The album earned 119,000 units in its second week.
