Actor Sam Asghari has initiated divorce proceedings from pop star Britney Spears, marking the end of their marriage just 14 months after their high-profile wedding, according to reports from various sources.
The divorce papers, filed by Sam Asghari on August 16, indicate the couple’s date of separation as July 28, 2023, and cite “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The paperwork also suggests that Sam is seeking spousal support and attorney fees from Britney. However, his filing mentioned that he is yet to fully assess the individual assets and obligations of each party.
Although E! News reached out to representatives and lawyers of both Britney Spears and Sam Asghari for comments, there has been no response as of now.
Reports of the impending breakup had surfaced online shortly before the divorce filing. A source familiar with the situation conveyed to NBC News that the separation was a decision that is in the best interest of Britney.
Britney Spears, 41, and Sam Asghari, 29, had been in a relationship for seven years before their marriage ended. Their connection began in 2016 when they met on the set of the music video for Britney’s song “Slumber Party.” The two quickly developed a strong bond and their relationship progressed beyond the professional realm.
Recalling their early interactions, Britney shared in a 2017 interview, “I kept his number, and it was so weird because it was like five months later that I found his number in my bag. I was like ‘He was really cute. This guy was really cute!’ so then I called him. He is just a really fun, funny person.”
Their engagement took place in September 2021, a significant moment amid Britney’s legal battle to end her 13-year conservatorship. Britney had testified that she and Sam were keen to start a family together, but her conservators prevented her from going off birth control. Her conservatorship was eventually terminated in November 2021.
Sam Asghari had also expressed his desire to have children with Britney during their engagement. In an interview with BBC in April 2022, he mentioned that having children should have happened “three years ago.” He emphasized that when you’re truly in love with someone, the desire to start a family becomes natural.
Britney Spears announced her pregnancy in April 2022. Unfortunately, the couple revealed in May 2022 that they had experienced a loss, stating, “we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy.”
In June 2022, Britney and Sam exchanged vows in a wedding reception with a fairytale theme. Notably, Britney’s family did not attend due to ongoing legal issues, and her sons were also absent from the event.
