Korea’s Showbox has recently added the horror mystery film “Taboo: The Silent Day” to its sales lineup at the Hong Kong FilMart. Directed by debut filmmaker Park Kyung-kun, the movie was shot in Indonesia with a Korean crew and cast. The story follows a group of friends on vacation in Bali whose trip takes a terrifying turn when they accidentally break a mysterious urn. This unleashes vengeful spirits during Nyepi Day, Bali’s sacred Day of Silence, where all activities involving eating, pleasure, travel, and light are suspended.
The film features Kwon Da-ham, Choi Tae-eun, and Lee Jeong-hoon in key roles. Currently in post-production, “Taboo: The Silent Day” is set for release in the third quarter of this year.
Showbox’s diverse lineup at FilMart includes a range of genres. Another notable film is the drama “Big Deal” (working title), directed by Choi Yun-jin. It tells the story of a young investment firm associate who returns to Korea during the 1997 Asian financial crisis to save the country’s top Soju company from bankruptcy. The film co-stars Yoo Hai-jin and is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2025.
Other upcoming releases include “Once We Were Us,” a romantic drama set for a third-quarter release, and “The Verdict,” a crime drama also slated for release in the third quarter. Additionally, “White Blast,” a mystery thriller directed by Hong Eui-jeong and Park Sun-woo, is expected to premiere at the end of the year.
