Colin Farrell, known for his role as The Penguin in The Batman series, is set to take on a new character in the DC universe. The actor is in talks to star in the upcoming Sgt. Rock movie, based on the popular comic book character, Sgt. Frank Rock, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The film, set during World War II, will follow Sgt. Rock as he leads the Easy Company in their battles against the Nazis. Luca Guadagnino, known for directing Call Me by Your Name, is set to helm the project. The screenplay is written by Justin Kuritzkes, a frequent collaborator with Guadagnino, including on Queer and Challengers.
Sgt. Rock was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, first appearing in Our Army at War in 1959. The character later gained a larger following, starring in his own series beginning in 1977.
Although reports initially suggested Daniel Craig might play the role of Sgt. Rock, DC Studios co-head James Gunn clarified in February that Craig was never attached to the project. Gunn and his counterpart Peter Safran expressed excitement about the unique perspective Sgt. Rock offers on heroism and conflict, with Safran praising the screenplay for helping push the project forward.
Filming for Sgt. Rock could begin later this year, but Farrell’s busy schedule might pose a challenge. In addition to this new project, the actor is also filming Sugar season 2 for Apple TV+ and starring in The Ballad of a Small Player, directed by Edward Berger.
Although Farrell’s role in The Penguin and the Sgt. Rock movie exist in separate DC universes, there is still potential for his return to the world of The Penguin. The HBO series, which earned Farrell multiple awards, may see a second season, though discussions are still in the early stages. Director Matt Reeves has expressed interest in continuing the story, emphasizing the need to maintain high standards for a possible return.
Meanwhile, the DC universe continues to expand with several upcoming projects, including Superman: Legacy, Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Lanterns, all slated for release in the coming years.
