A film adaptation of the popular co-op video game Split Fiction, developed by Hazelight Studios, is in the works, according to sources at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.
Media company Story Kitchen, known for its role in adapting It Takes Two into a film project now set up at Amazon, is spearheading the development. The team is currently assembling the film’s cast, writers, and director, as multiple major Hollywood studios engage in a bidding war for the adaptation rights.
Variety, which is covering GDC this week, will continue to track the competition for the rights, with more information expected soon. Representatives for both Hazelight Studios and Story Kitchen did not respond to requests for comment.
Split Fiction, written by Hazelight studio head Josef Fares and Sebastian Johansson, blends fantasy and science fiction. The game follows two authors who become trapped in the worlds they created. Its gameplay features split-screen combat, platforming challenges, and unique character abilities.
Since its release on March 6, the game has been well-received by both players and critics, quickly reaching over two million copies sold in its first week, with sales continuing to rise. Hazelight revealed the game at the 2024 Game Awards, and development began right after the release of It Takes Two in 2021. Amazon secured the film rights to It Takes Two in April 2022.
