Director Philip Barantini, known for the success of Netflix’s Adolescence, is in talks to helm the movie adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s bestselling novel The Alchemist. The film will be produced by Legendary Entertainment, with Sony’s TriStar Pictures handling distribution. Jack Thorne, who wrote Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, will pen the screenplay.
The Alchemist, first published in 1988, follows Santiago, a young man in search of treasure. The novel has sold over 150 million copies and holds the record for the most translated work by a living author.
Barantini, who is currently working on Enola Holmes 3, is expected to begin the Alchemist project after wrapping that film. Legendary plans to start production in 2026.
Adolescence, which explores digital culture’s impact on youth, has brought Barantini significant recognition. He is also known for Boiling Point, which was adapted into a BBC series, and created the ITV drama Malpractice.
