“A Minecraft Movie” dominated the box office, earning $80 million in its second weekend and maintaining the No. 1 spot. Although ticket sales dropped 50% from its record debut of $162.7 million, the film has earned $281 million domestically and $550 million globally in just 10 days. It is now the highest-grossing film of 2025, surpassing “Captain America: Brave New World”.
This success is crucial for the industry, which had faced a slow start to the year. Box office revenues were 11% behind last year, but “Minecraft” has helped narrow that gap. Upcoming films like “Sinners”, “Thunderbolts”, and “Mission: Impossible” are expected to keep sales strong.
New Releases
“The King of Kings”, an animated faith-based film from Angel Studios, earned $19 million in second place. The film, starring Kenneth Branagh and Uma Thurman, received mixed reviews but earned an “A+” on CinemaScore, signaling strong audience approval.
“The Amateur”, a thriller starring Rami Malek, opened in third place with $15 million, adding $17.2 million internationally. The film needs continued success to justify its $60 million production cost.
A24’s “Warfare”, a military thriller, debuted in fourth with $8.3 million, receiving positive reviews and an “A-“ grade on CinemaScore. Universal’s horror film “Drop” rounded out the top five with $7.7 million, performing modestly but still profitable due to its low budget.
Other Notable Performances
“The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3” earned $6.15 million in sixth place. Disney’s “Snow White” dropped to No. 8, grossing $2.8 million, bringing its total to $81.9 million.
“Minecraft”’s strong performance signals a hopeful turn for theaters as the summer movie season approaches.
