Green Day made a political statement during their headlining set at Coachella on Saturday night by altering the lyrics of their hit song “Jesus of Suburbia” to reference the ongoing Israel-Palestine war. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong changed the line “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimized” to “Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine / Tales from another broken home.”
This isn’t the first time Armstrong has modified lyrics for political reasons. Last month, during a performance in Australia, he replaced the line “Am I retarded, or am I just overjoyed?” with “Am I retarded, or am I just J.D. Vance?”
Green Day has long been known for their political activism, and their Coachella performance was no exception. The band delivered a high-energy set, blending their iconic hits with powerful political messages. In addition to the altered lyrics, Armstrong sang, “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” during “American Idiot,” and introduced “Holiday” with a statement against war.
Throughout their hour-and-a-half performance, Green Day showcased their legacy with hits like “Basket Case,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and “When I Come Around,” alongside fan favorites such as “Brain Stew” and “Minority.” Their ability to turn every song into an anthem was on full display.
The band also invited audience members on stage to join them for performances, demonstrating their connection with fans. During “Know Your Enemy,” a fan named Brooke sang with Armstrong, while another fan played Armstrong’s guitar during “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”
Green Day’s blend of political messages, fan interaction, and energetic performances reaffirmed their place as one of rock’s most enduring and influential acts.
