Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders introduced Clairo at her Coachella set on Saturday night, urging young attendees to become more engaged in political issues and applauding the singer-songwriter for using her platform to voice her opinions.
Clairo, who has been vocal about her political views, including a tweet on Inauguration Day calling for “Witchcraft on Trump ASAP” and revealing her vote for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, brought her political beliefs to the Coachella stage. Before Clairo’s performance, Congressman Maxwell Frost of Florida appeared to introduce Sanders, who had earlier that day hosted a “Fighting Oligarchy” rally in Los Angeles with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Sanders took the stage to thank both Clairo and Frost, saying, “I want to thank Clairo for allowing me to get up here, and I want to thank Maxwell Frost, a member of Congress, one of the best and youngest members.” He went on to address the audience, emphasizing the importance of the younger generation in shaping America’s future.
“This country faces some very difficult challenges, and the future of what happens to America is dependent upon your generation,” Sanders said. “You can turn away, but if you do, you do it at your own peril. We need you to stand up, to fight for justice—economic, social, and racial justice.”
Sanders also criticized the current administration, particularly the president’s stance on climate change, and urged the crowd to fight against the fossil fuel industry. “We need you to stand up and fight for women’s rights,” he continued, referencing efforts in various states to limit women’s reproductive rights. Sanders also highlighted the economic disparities in the U.S., calling for a system that benefits working families, not just the wealthy.
Turning to Clairo, Sanders acknowledged her advocacy for Gaza and women’s rights, praising her for using her prominence to advocate for social causes. “I’m here to introduce Clairo, not just because they are a great artist, but because Clairo has used her platform to fight for women’s rights and to try to end the brutal war in Gaza,” Sanders said. “I want to thank Clairo not only for being an amazing artist but for the incredible work she’s doing.”
