Pop star Charli XCX is set to star in and produce the next film by legendary Japanese horror filmmaker Takashi Miike, Variety has learned. The untitled project will be produced through her Studio365 banner, marking her second production venture following A24’s upcoming film The Moment.
Details about the plot remain under wraps, but the film will feature a script by Ross Evans, who is also developing How to Save a Marriage for Sony with Robert Pattinson attached as a producer. Miike, known for his bold and often extreme visual style, gained cult status with films like Audition (1999) and Ichi the Killer (2001).
Charli XCX’s involvement comes during a busy year for the multi-hyphenate artist. Following the success of her sixth studio album Brat—released in June 2024 and credited with earning her three Grammy Awards—she has shifted focus toward acting and producing. Her upcoming roles include Aidan Zamiri’s The Moment, Julia Jackman’s fantasy 100 Nights of Hero, Pete Ohs and Jeremy O. Harris’ Erupcja, Daniel Goldhaber’s Faces of Death remake, Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex, Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice, and Cathy Yan’s thriller The Gallerist alongside Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega.
Miike, one of Japan’s most prolific filmmakers, has directed more than 100 movies since 1991. His works span horror, action, and drama, including titles like Dead or Alive (1999), Visitor Q (2001), One Missed Call (2003), 13 Assassins (2010), and Hara-Kiri (2011). His latest film, Sham, is scheduled to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The collaboration promises a high-profile fusion of pop stardom and genre cinema, setting the stage for a striking new chapter in both Miike’s and Charli’s careers.
