“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is bringing a familiar writer back to the team. A.D. Miles, a longtime Fallon collaborator who previously served as head writer on the NBC late-night talk show, is returning to the show, Variety has confirmed.
Mason Steinberg, who was hired in the role last year, is leaving.
Miles stepped down from the head writer position in 2017 to pursue acting and narrative writing for television and film. At the time, he had been working with Fallon for eight years, having first met on NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, which ran from 2009 to 2014 before Fallon took over The Tonight Show. They have worked together on over 1,500 episodes of late night television.
Miles has appeared in several segments on “The Tonight Show,” most notably as stepfather Gary in Fallon’s series of “Ew!” sketches featuring celebrities such as Emma Stone, Taylor Swift and Drew Barrymore. He has also appeared on the talk show as a member of The Ragtime Gals.
In addition to his work on The Tonight Show, Miles wrote for Comedy Central’s Dog Bites Man, which he also starred in, and the 62nd Emmy Awards, which Fallon hosted. On the acting side, he appeared in 2001’s Wet Hot American Summer and both the Netflix prequel series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” and the follow-up series “Ten Years Later”. He has also made guest appearances on series such as Reno 911 and Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job!
