Amber Heard’s legal team & Johnny Depp’s attorney reflected on the impact of cameras in the courtroom during the defamation case verdict.
Two years have elapsed since a Virginia jury sided with Johnny Depp in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard. The jury favored Depp, finding Heard responsible for defaming him in her op-ed for The Washington Post. Following multiple appeals, a settlement was reached by both parties. On the second anniversary of the verdict, Depp and Heard’s attorneys shared their insights on the trial.
Amber Heard’s attorney, Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, expressed regret about allowing cameras in the courtroom. She believed it was a significant mistake that influenced public perception negatively. Bredehoft mentioned her efforts to prevent cameras following Depp’s request for a televised trial, but social media took control of the narrative, leading to memes that distorted trial moments. This, she argued, contributed to a biased portrayal of her client.
In contrast, Depp’s attorney, Camille Vasquez, viewed the presence of cameras differently. She believed it highlighted the importance of winning both legally and in the public eye. Vasquez acknowledged the existence of manipulated memes but emphasized that they often reflected actual evidence presented during the trial.
Amber Heard expressed disappointment with the verdict, stating it regressed to a time of public shaming for women speaking out. Depp saw his case as a step towards justice for those facing similar situations.
