Whoopi Goldberg is set to reunite with her “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” co-stars during a special episode of “The View” airing on ABC this Wednesday, June 5, celebrating the film’s 30th anniversary.
The reunion will feature Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena, who played Sister Mary Patrick and Sister Mary Robert respectively, both in the original film and its sequel. Filming took place at the end of May in New York City.
“Sister Act 2,” released in 1993, follows Goldberg’s character, Deloris Van Cartier, as she dons her nun disguise again to help her former school’s choir succeed and save the school from closure. The film also starred Lauryn Hill as Rita Watson, though she is not mentioned in the lineup for the upcoming “The View” episode. However, Sheryl Lee Ralph, who portrayed Rita’s mother Florence Watson, is confirmed to appear.
Also joining the reunion are Ryan Toby and Tanya Trotter, who have both found success in the music industry after their roles in the movie. The episode promises some surprises for Goldberg and will feature performances of hit songs from the movie, including “Joyful, Joyful” and “Oh Happy Day,” with music supervisor Marc Shaiman and composer Mervyn Warren participating.
Goldberg, currently preparing for “Sister Act 3,” announced by Walt Disney Studios in 2020 with Tyler Perry as producer, shared that the script is ready. Najimy and Makkena might return, judging by their involvement in the reunion.
Throughout her tenure on “The View,” Goldberg has extended invitations to numerous celebrities to join the “Sister Act” franchise. She recently made a heartfelt appeal to Dame Maggie Smith, who played Mother Superior in the first two films, to reprise her role.
Previously, in 2017, “The View” hosted a 25th-anniversary reunion for the original “Sister Act” film, which included a memorable performance led by Goldberg and her co-stars.
