Johnny Depp has been cast as Satan in Terry Gilliam’s new movie, The Carnival At The End Of Days. This will be Depp’s second major role since his high-profile defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard concluded in the US two years ago.
A New Collaboration with Terry Gilliam
Terry Gilliam, the American-born British filmmaker and Monty Python star, has described the movie as an apocalyptic comedy. The film will feature characters like God and Adam and Eve. Depp, 60, has worked with the 83-year-old Gilliam before, most notably in the 1998 film adaptation of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson.
Depp’s Recent Work
Depp’s last big-screen appearance was in the French historical drama Jeanne Du Barry, where he played King Louis XV. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
An Apocalyptic Comedy
Gilliam, known for his distinctive animated collages used in Monty Python’s opening credits, discussed his new project with French film magazine Première. He described it as “a comedy where God decides to destroy humanity. And the only one trying to save us is Satan because he needs people in hell, otherwise he won’t have a job for eternity.”
A Star-Studded Cast
Jeff Bridges will play God in the movie, depicted in the form of “nature” and using “animation to bring it to life.” The cast also includes Adam Driver and Jason Momoa, although their roles have not been revealed yet. Momoa is best known for his role as Aquaman, where he starred opposite Depp’s ex-wife, Heard, who played Mera in the DC Comics franchise.
Gilliam mentioned that the movie will feature “a modern Adam and Eve,” adding, “Now we need a woman to complete all that.” He also teased that the film would be “very expensive” and “very funny for those who like to be offended.”
Production Timeline
Work on the film is set to begin in January 2025. This will be Depp’s second major film since he won his defamation case against Heard in 2022 over an article she wrote for The Washington Post about her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse. Depp’s lawyers argued that the article falsely accused him of being an abuser.
In 2020, Depp lost a libel case against the publishers of The Sun newspaper after a High Court judge found that Depp had assaulted Heard during their relationship.
Depp’s Career Challenges
Depp, who was replaced as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise in 2020, accused Hollywood of shunning him after losing the libel case.
The release date for The Carnival At The End Of Days has not yet been announced.
