TV personality and Brixton resident Sharon Osbourne has endorsed an open letter urging the next government to prioritize cancer treatment and research.
Osbourne, along with interior designer Kelly Hoppen and actor Jimmy Akingbola, has joined the call to action. As election day nears, the trio, along with other celebrities, have signed a letter from Cancer Research UK. This letter urges all party leaders to make the upcoming election a pivotal moment for those affected by cancer.
Sharon Osbourne, a colon cancer survivor, is advocating for this cause alongside Kelly Hoppen, a breast cancer survivor, and Jimmy Akingbola, who lost his brother Segun to the disease. The letter emphasizes the urgent need to address cancer waiting times, unequal access to diagnosis and treatment, and a significant funding gap for life-saving research, estimated at £1 billion. It calls on party leaders to prioritize cancer in their manifestos, stressing the necessity of a long-term cancer strategy for England to improve survival rates.
Osbourne publicly supported the cause on X.
Cancer Research UK highlights the growing urgency, with around half a million cancer cases projected annually in the UK by 2040, including an estimated 48,000 in London. They stress the importance of public involvement in addressing this issue.
A spokesperson for Cancer Research UK expressed gratitude for the support from Osbourne, Hoppen, and Akingbola, acknowledging their personal connections to the cause and the devastating impact of a cancer diagnosis.
