The diverse lineup of guests on “Everybody’s in L.A.” drew inspiration from “The Chris Rock Show.”
John Mulaney openly credits specific sources of inspiration for his recent Netflix variety show, Everybody’s in L.A.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Mulaney explains that the show’s unique array of guests, ranging from former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark to Jerry Seinfeld to a coyote expert, reflects his personal interests and draws from what he admired in Chris Rock’s talk show from the 1990s.
In particular, Mulaney recalls a segment on Rock’s show where he interviewed the late Johnnie Cochran, the criminal defense attorney known for his role in Simpson’s trial against Clark in the 1990s. Reflecting on Simpson’s recent passing, Mulaney mentions how it has prompted reflections on the trial’s lasting impact.
“I was somewhat emulating The Chris Rock Show,” Mulaney tells IndieWire. “Seeing him feature Cochran made an impression on me as a child, realizing he brought on guests he found intriguing.”
Mulaney, a product of the 1990s, shares that the Simpson trial deeply captivated him as a child, a topic he could discuss endlessly. However, Mulaney’s admiration for Clark extends beyond the trial. She had previously appeared on Mulaney’s Broadway show Oh, Hello even before Everybody’s in L.A.
“Additionally, her pro bono legal work is fascinating,” Mulaney adds. “She’s not only a skilled writer but her latest book, Trial by Ambush, delves into the history of former Los Angeles district attorneys, examining their legacies. I find her insights engaging and could converse with her on any topic.”
Viewers can catch Clark’s appearance on the “Helicopters” episode of John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In L.A., now available for streaming on Netflix since its live premiere in May.
