How Shania Twain Healed After a Heartbreaking Affair: ‘I Got What I Deserve’.
Shania Twain’s life fell apart 14 years into her first marriage. In 2008, she discovered that her husband, music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, was having an affair with her friend and assistant, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. This revelation left Twain feeling “uncontrollably fragile” and “so angry.” Despite the pain, their divorce was finalized in 2010. Remarkably, the following year, Twain married Marie-Anne’s ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud, who was also going through the same heartbreak.
Years later, Twain has made peace with her ex-husband and his actions. On the May 28 episode of the “Great Company with Jamie Laing” podcast, she explained her perspective on forgiveness. “Forgiveness is in the family of letting go,” she said. “But forgiveness, more specifically understanding the other person, might mean accepting that they were wrong. You might believe forever that what they did was wrong.”
The singer, known for hits like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” is now 58 and understands she is not to blame for her ex-husband’s actions. “Do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake? No. It’s his mistake, not mine,” Twain said. “It’s sad for him that he made such a great mistake that he has to live with. But that’s not my burden.”
Despite the heartbreak, Twain found true happiness. “I think everyone gets what they deserve. I got what I deserve,” she said about her relationship with Frédéric. “I got the greatest man on the planet.”
