Johnny Depp, known for his roles in various films, recently shared about winning the iconic role of Edward Scissorhands despite facing self-doubt.
In an interview, Depp mentioned that he competed against well-known actors like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and even Michael Jackson for the lead role in Tim Burton’s 1990 movie ‘Edward Scissorhands.’
He revealed that Tom Cruise was also considered for the part, but in the end, he was chosen for the role. Depp expressed his admiration for the script and the character of Edward, saying that it resonated with him deeply.
The story revolves around Edward, a gentle outsider with scissor blades for hands, created by a scientist. Depp praised the writing and the character, noting that it allowed him to connect emotionally.
Before ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ Depp felt typecast as a teen idol due to his earlier roles. However, his role in ‘Cry-Baby’ marked a shift towards the type of roles he wanted to pursue.
Despite initial doubts, Depp eventually met with Burton and was selected for the role, which earned him critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination.
Depp has collaborated with Burton on several other projects, showcasing their successful partnership in Hollywood.
The documentary series featuring Tim Burton’s work will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 10th.
