The 77th Annual Tony Awards are set to celebrate the best of Broadway on Sunday night, with Ariana DeBose returning as host for the third time. The ceremony, airing on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m.
ET, will feature performances from nominated musicals.
Two productions stand out among the nominees: the Alicia Keys musical “Hell’s Kitchen” and David Adjmi’s play “Stereophonic,” each garnering 13 nominations. “Stereophonic,” the most nominated play in Broadway history, is a transfer from a successful off-Broadway run. Both shows are considered front-runners for Best Musical and Best Play, respectively.
A highly acclaimed revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” is favored to win Best Musical Revival.
Jonathan Groff, who stars as a Broadway composer, is considered a favorite for Best Actor in a Musical. His co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, are also in contention for supporting actor awards.
Other nominees for Best Musical include “Illinoise,” a dance piece inspired by Sufjan Stevens’ music; two musicals based on books and movies, “The Outsiders” and “Water for Elephants”; and the original musical “Suffs,” about the women’s suffrage movement.
The Best Actress in a Musical category is considered a close race, with Kelli O’Hara for her role in “The Days of Wine and Roses” and Maleah Joi Moon for her Broadway debut in “Hell’s Kitchen” both considered strong contenders.
The Best Actor in a Play category features Jeremy Strong, known for his role in “Succession,” for his performance in “An Enemy of the People,” and Leslie Odom Jr. for his role in “Purlie Victorious.” The Best Actress in a Play category boasts a star-studded lineup, including Jessica Lange for “Mother Play,” Rachel McAdams for “Mary Jane,” and Sarah Paulson for her role in the revival of “Appropriate.”
The Tony Awards will honor the best in Broadway theater, showcasing the talents of performers, writers, and directors who bring these productions to life.
