Kate Winslet recently shared her thoughts on the iconic kiss scene with Leonardo DiCaprio in “Titanic.” While the scene appeared romantic on screen, Winslet revealed that behind the scenes, it was quite challenging.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Winslet mentioned that despite DiCaprio’s charm, the experience of shooting the scene was not as glamorous as it seemed. She described it as “a mess,” citing several factors that made it difficult.
One challenge was the tightness of her dress, which made it hard for her to breathe. Additionally, she accidentally banged her leg on the ship’s railing multiple times. Moreover, the distance from the crew made it challenging for the hair and makeup team to assist them promptly.
Accessing the set required climbing a ladder, forcing Winslet to hide makeup and brushes in her jacket and adjust their appearance between takes. This constant adjustment led to makeup mishaps, with Winslet jokingly mentioning that she ended up looking like she had been eating chocolate bars due to DiCaprio’s makeup transferring to her face.
Director James Cameron’s meticulous vision for the scene also contributed to the challenges, requiring numerous retakes to achieve the desired lighting amidst changing sunset conditions.
Despite the difficulties, Winslet fondly looks back on the overall experience of filming “Titanic.” She expressed pride in the film’s enduring legacy, noting that new generations continue to discover and appreciate it.
However, one aspect that continues to amuse Winslet is when people ask her to reenact the famous scene whenever she’s on a boat, a request she finds amusingly repetitive.
